TOWN IS STIRRING/ BUT IT'S STILL DANGEROUS

The Roadrunner crew returned to the office for a few hours today as we published our issue of the paper, a day late. We're still not open yet and may not be for awhile. While we were returning we actually ran into some National Guardsmen (with guns!) who asked our business. That lets you know it's serious.

While there we noticed that some businesses are stirring. The Valley Center Market and Papa Bear's restaurant were open, so was Bob Wisecarver's Community Pharmacy and two gas stations. Keep in mind that the authorities are not letting residents back in yet, mainly because they don't want them underfoot as they move emergency vehicles to and fro.

Sad news from Linda Jauregui whose family lost their home last night as the fire came over the Guejito in a firestorm. They lost everything despite their efforts, including their pets.

Donna & Peter Jauregui, Matt & Valerie Jauregui, John & Crystal Culver and apparently five other couples lost theirs. I can't say whether they all lost them last night, but that's the total so far. You can read their whole post in our comments section.

Please note that if anyone needs help to get ahold of us at The Roadrunner so we can post your need on our "Aid and Comfort" column that will be running each week and on the website. This will be dialed in with local relief efforts.

The experience of the Jaureguis and these other families will perhaps quiet down some of the whiners who wonder why they can't get back home. There is still DANGER in Valley Center. You can always disregard the authorities when they tell you you have to evacuate, but once gone you should rely on their best judgment in letting you back in.

Here is an update from a gentleman named "Mitch B." I will occasionally include posts that I can't personally vouch for when they seem to gibe with known facts, so here it is:

" Anyhow as of 8:56 pm 10/24/07:
Came back into town trough Old Castle/W Lilac (Yes it is officially closed!) no access unless official business!! Town proper north and south nodes are quite and fine.

Officials are covering the town and things are very quiet (command post at Community/Civic center @ Lilac & Valley Ctr Rd), this is good! fire and sheriff are just keeping eye on things in town proper.

Came up to Mac Tan North of Fruitvale via Vesper... all south, west, and as I can see to north are good.... things are very quiet. no smoke or glow close to this location or to the south, west, or north, (NE faint glow....) smoke is minimal. wind changinging faint from the NE??...not great but any info on The line to held @ Hellhole or Yellowbrook (SIC) please advise but for now we look very good!"

I'm going to sign off for the evening unless I hear something significant, such as my home burning down.

Meantime. Good luck and be safe.

Thanks Dave for keeping us updated. With little info or inaccurate its nice to have some REAL info. Despite what some say about VC residents being out and about we will stay out until told to come home!

You know...
I was going to toss in my 2 cents at about 10pm (when I first came across your blog), but saw that you were shutting down for the night. Then... new posts at 10:45, hahaha.

Just wanted to say, I was living on Woods Valley Rd. in 2003, and we stayed and we fought, and we won.
We stayed this time too, and although we're not quite out of the woods, I'm very glad we stayed. All looks well from a clear view at 1650' on Miller Extension.
I hope everyone gets home soon, but VC sure is beautiful in this vacant state!
David, it's great to see such dedicated reporting! Good Job, Man!
Peaceful night to all,
@ndrea

This is Dana Chisholm, Chris's mom. He would like to be in touch with Thomas...the other boys have been texting and calling each other ... but missing Thomas. We are sooo sorry for your loss and will be there to help every step of the way. Have Thomas call Chris on his cell phone when he gets a chance (he says Thomas knows his number - or call Alec or Hayden and the boys can connect). Tell Thomas HE is my favorite :-)

We stayed in our home near Cole Grade and Valley Center Road. Since Valley Center High School was a evacuation site, we felt we would be ok. I am sure glad we stayed, but still keep a watchful eye for any changes. A lot of friends have called wishing they too had stayed. Now they cannot get back into Valley Center. We were able to get milk and other goodies today with the market opened. This is still very stressful and we will be glad when it ends. "Stirring in Valley Center"

I am trying to find the Jauregui post in the comment section and I'm not seeing it. Can you clarify which post the comment is under?

This is an email from Valeri Jauregui

Subject: God is great

Thanks so much for calling me today. I'm sorry I haven't been able to call back yet. We so appreciate all of the love, support and prayers.. We lost our cats and our dog Lacy. She was a very sweet Australian Shepherd, who was going to have puppies any day. The kids and I evacuated to my mom's apartment in Escondido and I couldn't take the pets. I thought Lacy would be safe with my husband who stayed to try to save our homes.

I'm so thankful that he, my brothers-in-law, and nephews, who also stayed to save homes, are safe. Unfortunately, however, we did lose our homes, (both the one we lived in and the new manufactured home that we bought and were going to move into over the next few months). We did not have any insurance on either house because our old home was so old and run down and we looked upon it as temporary, and our new one couldn't be insured until we got our occupancy permit. The kids and I had time to pack some clothes, pictures, the computer tower and a few other things. We really believed we'd be back in a couple days so we left many things that we would have taken if we had had the benefit of hindsight. My husband wishes he had driven my car to a safer place. We have to let all of that go however and trust in God. He is so good. He truly provides for all our needs and His love endures forever.

The kids are very anxious to get "home." I pray for God's help for them when they see all the ruins. Matthew said that it's hard to believe the houses are gone.

People have been very supportive. My cousin organized a clothing drive for us and is sending loads of clothes and my brother and sister-in-law drove down from Reseda to be here with us. They took us out to eat and bought us a lot of basic things that we needed. Dear friends have also given us money so we could use it for whatever we need most.

I know that people are asking about how to help and we so appreciate it. Prayer is always a big help. (I'm praying for the continued safety of all our loved ones and of all who have been impacted by these fires. I'm also praying that FEMA will cover our new house. So far they have said they will not but I'm going to talk to them again.)

If anyone asks you about us you are welcome to forward this message to them or to let them know how we are doing. If anyone asks what they can do for us, we welcome their prayers and whatever help they are able to offer. It looks as if we will have a place to live for a while. My mother-in-law has a small guest house up on the family property. The kids are happy we will be able to live next door to Grandma and Grandpa. Probably what we could use most would be gift cards to stores like Target, Walmart, Mervyns, Costco, Vons, Ralphs, or Stater Bros. But of course we won't refuse anything and whatever we receive that we can't use we will pass along to someone who can. We have other family members who have lost their homes as well. Thanks again and God bless you.

Valerie

FYI--as of October 25 8:30 a.m. there is still a roadblock set up on Circle R drive preventing people from getting into the west side of Valley Center. I am still in VC and am near W Lilac and Circle R/Spearhead/ANdreen, everything is fine in our neighborhood. Lots of ash, kind of smokey...You can see the fire towards Palomar/Pauma though

Boy, they are not kidding when they say that they are NOT letting anyone back in. Tuesday, husband needed gas and made the mistake of going down hill (gas stations in town closed). He couldn't get back!! No amount of begging or pleading helped. So, we are now sitting in Rancho Penasquitos waiting...... At least we are together as a family with friends that are being really great! To all residents, take care & be safe!!

We live in Cuca Ranch across the valley from the intersection of South Grade Road and SR-76? There's an old green dump truck in the yard.

Does anyone have information about the homes in that area?

We live off Oak Trail & Paradise Mtn. Rd. As of 12:23 pm Thursday, Oct. 25 we are wondering when we will be allowed back in.
Is the fire n Hellhole still going?
I know things change by the hour but we are in Riverside and cannot get any San Diego news.

Melissa Jauregui,
Its Dana (Chris' mom) again. We snuck back home this morning. We took some dirt roads behind the road blocks...shhh, don't tell anyone :-) We will stay in our house and out of their way and behave ourselves.
We are back into our house at Woods Valley golf course. All is well - not that the news would tell you anything. We have power, phones, cable, etc...and a couple other neighbors have figured out ways back in and we will stay in contact in case we need to get out to stay safe.
If Thomas and others are still out at the ranch and need anything - they are welcome to come here for food, showers, water, whatever they need. It seems once you get past the guys with M16's, there aren't other road blocks - except he might have trouble getting past the LW/WV/Paradise Mtn intersection? Thomas knows where we are...if he needs anything, tell him to come on over or call and we'll try to get whatever he needs out to him.

PS everyone - just as we arrived home, the mail man delivered a package!!! It was a man named Jeff Johnson who lives in Hemet and our Post Office put out a call for help and he volunteered! He said he will be here for at least three days delivering our mail. He said the gal who is our regular carrier has been evacuated and busy with her family and taking care of things so our post master put out the call for help...God bless all the wonderful people willing to help!!! I told him, I knew they worked through sleet and snow, but wasn't aware that they even worked through fire! LOL

PPS A friend that has been evacuated since Sunday is the GM at Panera and is delivering food to the police and fireman in Valley Center today.
