Make Your Thoughts Known on County Redistricting

ONE WEEK LEFT TO SUBMIT COUNTY REDISTRICTING PLANS

Public Can Submit Formal Plans through May 9; Suggestions Welcome After That
With the May 9 deadline quickly approaching, residents are encouraged to submit their County redistricting plans online or in person at one of two Redistricting Advisory Committee meetings before the deadline.
The next meeting–the last in a series of evening meetings around the region–is at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, May 3, in the Planning Commission Hearing Room at the County Operations Center Annex, 5201 Ruffin Road, in Kearny Mesa.
In County redistricting, a “plan” means a set of data that assigns Census tracts or blocks to a particular supervisorial district.
Residents may propose a complete plan for the County’s five districts or a partial plan for one or more districts; data should be submitted as an electronic file.
The 2010 Census data for building plans is online at the County’s Redistricting website, along with detailed instructions and definitions. Each publicly-submitted plan will be published online and forwarded to the County’s Redistricting Advisory Committee for consideration.
On May 9, the Redistricting Advisory Committee will begin discussing redistricting plan proposals, and any formal plans they consider will be posted online. Residents will be encouraged to weigh in with ideas and suggestions during this part of the process. Input will be welcome in person at a Redistricting Advisory Committee meeting, by email or by U.S. mail.
A meeting schedule and details on how to submit suggestions are available online.
The County’s Redistricting Advisory Committee is a citizen’s panel charged with gathering public opinion and recommending no more than three proposed redistricting plans to the Board of Supervisors. The Committee is scheduled make its proposals to the Board on June 28.
The Board will consider redistricting plans at a series of public meetings before adopting a final plan that takes effect in early September.
