TPC sponsored movie Oct. 14

Rio, rated G, will be shown Friday, Oct. 14, 7 p.m. on the soccer field at the Elementary School. Movie Night is brought to you by the Valley Center Primary and Elementary Teachers Parent Club, and is open to the community for an enjoyable evening under the stars with family, friends and fellow students. Join the group at 6 p.m. as snacks and hot dogs will be available for sale. Movie donation per person is $3. Grab your blankets, lawn chairs, flashlights and and sense of adventure for what promises to be a memorable night out.

FIRE PREVENTION FAIR

The Pala Band of Mission Indians will hold its 6th Annual Fire Prevention Fair on Oct. 1, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Pala Fire Station in Pala. This event is free and open to the public.

Spend the day with the Pala Fire Department to learn more about the facility and fire safety. Attendees will have the opportunity to tour the fire station and take photos on the fire engines. There will also be unique demonstrations: firefighters will extinguish a live vehicle fire and conduct a water drop from a helicopter.

The event will include information booths, children’s activities and a BBQ cooked by the firefighters as well.

VCTA Open House Wednesday

Relay for Life captains meeting Monday

RELAY FOR LIFE—The American Cancer Society will hold a Relay For Life event Aug. 20–21 at Bates Nut Farm. Volunteers and teams are very much needed.
The event’s first team captain meeting will be held Aug. 1, 6 p.m., at the Valley Center Chamber of Commerce office, 27301 Valley Center Rd.
Relay for Life events give people in communities across the globe a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease.
At Relay, teams of people camp out at a local high school, park, or fairground and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event and because cancer never sleeps, Relays are overnight events up to 24 hours in length.

Sherry Bumgardner needs donations so that she can captain her team for the third year in a row to raise funds to fight and help find the cure for breast cancer.

Vaqueros general meeting Thursday

VC Vaqueros will hold their general meeting July 14, 7-9 p.m. in the Basement of VC Community Hall. Speaker will be from VC LAST . The public is always welcome. Plans will be made for the Chamber Sundowner at the equestrian park on July 21 at 5:30 p.m. The Vaqueros are hosting this event.

PAGEANT FUND-RAISER

You are invited to Jag’s Grill and Spirits for a fund-raising event Wednesday June 22, 4–9 pm.

Jag’s will sponsor a fund-raiser for Brandy Kane, Mrs. San Diego County International 2011, who will compete in the Mrs. California International Pageant this September. This fund-raiser will be to support Mrs. San Diego County International, her sponsorship and competition fees and her platform which is Rape Awareness and Prevention.

She will be available at the fund-raiser to sign autographs, take photos and greet guests. Jag’s will give back 15% of the total bill, excluding alcohol, to Brandy Kane Mrs. San Diego County International at the end of the fund-raiser. Of the proceeds raised a portion will be given towards her sponsorship and a portion will be donated to her charity of choice The Center for Community Solutions which is an organization who provides support and resources to abuse, rape and sexual assault victims.

There will also be a drawing at 7:30 pm. Tickets will be available in advance and/or for purchase at the door for $10. Prizes have been donated by sponsors and businesses throughout San Diego and numerous prizes will be given away.

Teen Pregnancy Program

Indian Health Council’s Teen Pregnancy Program is hosting an event on Wednesday, May 25 from 5–730 p.m. at the Tribal Hall in Rincon. It is Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month. We will be screening the MTV Series 16 and Pregnant and will have a panel of young single moms to answer questions to the teens (Native and Non-Native) about the realities and responsibilities of being a young and single mom.

Services for Armond Martineau Friday

Funeral Mass for Armond Martineau, who died May 15, will be celebrated at 1 p.m. on Friday, May 20 at St. Stephen Catholic Church with the Rosary at 12:30 p.m. Committal will follow at VC Cemetery. A reception to honor his life will follow at the church.

RiverCard Championship

Nick Spiteri was the winner of the first-ever RiverCard Championship trophy Sunday night at Pala.

Poker Trophy: River Card Cup

Midnight Sunday (tonight) some lucky poker player will win the first River Card Cup at Pala Casino's poker room, being sponsored by River Card Inc., a clothing brand recently formed by local residents Morgan Brown and Greg Whistler.

There are about 117 players in the tournament, Brown tells The Roadrunner.

The Miller family in Valley Center has lost their dog Dexter (shown in the photo). They sent us this email message on Wednesday:


"Our dog Dexter is missing, we live in Valley Center California. Our yard is fenced, the last time he was seen was early afternoon on May 11th running around with our other dog Katie...if you can forward this e-mail anyone living in the Valley Center and even Escondido area...it would be appreciated.

Dexter is an Aussie mix, he is mostly black...right now his long coat is shaven off. If anyone finds him please contact Lynn Miller @ 760-751-9184."

Volunteers needed for Senior Presentation Day at high school

Valley Center High School needs community panelists for “Senior Presentation Days,” which happens June 1 & 2 on campus.

Seniors have spent most of this semester working on their senior portfolios for this presentation, which includes essays on post secondary goals, writing reflection, a Powerpoint on their career choices, and other items. As a panelist you will have the opportunity to evaluate their presentations using a grading rubric.

The presentations are less than ten minutes long, with a five-minute Q&A following.

According to Craig Adams of VCHS, who oversees the program, “We at VCHS believe that your participation as a businessperson, community member, or parent will give the students a better perspective as to how they may evaluated in a professional job interview situation.”

The emphasis on public performance and written documentation of student work provides a more “formative” kind of accountability for seniors, said Adams.

The students will discuss their perspective on education, their courses of study, present their accomplishments of the school’s “Expected School-wide Learning Results” and share their goals and objectives as they go from high school to college and the real world.

“Senior Presentation Days” will be Wednesday and Thursday, June 1 & 2, 7:30 a.m. –2:07 p.m. Each day there are three block periods of about 2 hours each. Seniors will be interviewed during their English class time in eight different rooms, with three panelists per room.

“Even a commitment to just ONE block period will be helpful,” said Adams. “Of course, we would appreciate it if you could stay longer!” A continental breakfast and complimentary lunch will be provided to all panelists.

The school asks that you sign up no later than Friday, May 27 so they can make the schedule.

TIME TO REGISTER FOR FALL CLASSES

Spring is here and it is time for Valley Center Pauma Unified School Districts’s (VCPUSD) current students to register for the fall and update important student information.
The Census Verification form will be sent home with students this week and the rest are available on the VCPUSD Web site: www.vcpusd.net under the Parents Tab.
Parents can download, enter information, print and sign the required forms. All four forms are due back to the student’s current school by June 3 .
Spring is also the time that parents can request an intradistrict transfer from one school to another for the next school year. In keeping with California’s Education Code, VCPUSD procedures include:
• Students in good standing on current intradistrict transfers continue and do not need to reapply, however, students may be displaced due to excessive enrollment.
• New intradistrict transfer request forms can be obtained online and must be received at the school site of residence by May 15, 2011 to be considered.
• Enrollment in a school of choice is determined by lot from the pool of eligible applicants. A waiting list will be established to indicate the order in which applicants may be accepted if openings occur later in the year.
If parents have any questions regarding enrollments or transfer requests, they can call the school principal of their child’s school of residence.
